Since the dawn of the modern era, the consumption and distribution of energy has been the highest priority of mankind. However, the apathy historically adopted toward energy and its side-effects is no longer viable. A new, more environmentally-friendly source of energy has to be developed to fulfill our own needs without engineering our self-destruction by relying on non-renewable oil-based methods. During the last few decades, two new technologies have emerged; the development and implementation of Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) and, more recently, Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs).
Hybrids use two motors to make the vehicle run: an internal combustion engine that uses gasoline and an electric motor. The electric motor is recharged during driving, both from the fuel burning in the internal combustion engine and through the kinetic energy recaptured during braking.
IPCO developed the HYBRID RUNA engine by implementing Plugin Hybrid technology. This electrical powertrain unit charges the 3-cylinder gasoline engine. This strategy allows the driver to ride 80km without fuel consumption (with only one battery charge).
